Increase our pay. Our members of parliament are the most “interesting” people we ever chose. Even before they started their work, a few weeks into government we could hear them yapping about how they wanted their salaries to be increased.
The loudest people in this whole scenario are the old guys who have been there for a very long time. When did people start asking for more pay in this world when they have not even worked?
On Tuesday evening it was a full house as the members of the national assembly made a resolution that was so unanimous to allow them revoke a notice that is legal that was made by the salaries and remuneration commission.
Jakoyo midiwo who is the deputy leader of minority party told the administrators of parliament to ensure that after their meeting on Tuesday evening changes on their salaries would be increased to Ksh 851, 000 from the previous Ksh 532, 500 as published in the Kenya Gazette. They termed it as inappropriate.
Notice on Pay is Illegal
Members of the national assembly cheered Jakoyo who claimed that some of the mistakes made in the tenth parliament had not been corrected.
An accusatory finger was pointed at Sarah Serem who is the Chairman of the Salaries Commission claiming that she had come up with the whole idea of their salaries in a manner which was not in line with their agreement.
Here we are complaining about their behavior but the same people are threatening to “merge or kill the constitution commission.”
William Cheptumo who is the chairperson of the committee on delegated legislation even tried to console them by explaining to them why the notice was illegal. They even went ahead to applaud and cheer him as they always do when someone supports their actions.
“In effecting any regulation of whatever name or of whatever nature, you should as a matter of procedure or a matter of law be able to table it in Parliament so that the House is able to approve having satisfied itself on the contents of the regulation” said Mr Cheptumo.

Pay the Poor
One can easily tell from the way they speak that they are a bitter lot. Imagine a member of parliament terming themselves a “poor” when there is a Kenyan somewhere who doesn’t even make a dollar a day. Not because they are lazy.
Our members of Parliament are complaining that they have not been paid any money ever since they were appointed. Who would pay them if all they have been doing is to strategize on how the pay would be increased instead of working hard for it to happen.
“When people are poor, when they have nothing, the probability of compromise is very high,” said Mr Linturi.
Their complaints focused on Charles Nyachae claiming that he earns more yet he works less. Take a look around the places where these people are from and show us who deserves a pay rise.
Maybe next time they come for our votes we should ask them how much they expect to be paid when they get there so that we can determine if they are money minded or just ready for good leadership.
