On 14th July 2013, Julie Gichuru interviewed the deputy president William Ruto(the reverse is also true) with focus to Jubilee’s 100 days in office. What it is that they have achieved in office until now and what Kenyans should expect before the next general elections. Just in case you missed the episode, you can watch it here to hear what the deputy vice president had to say.
There was a lot of reactions especially on social media on the way Julie conducted the interview and many people argue that she was incompetent and let William Ruto take over the interview.
Some Points Made by William Ruto
Lets analyse the points that the deputy president put across for the Kenyan citizens.
- The deputy president said the unga on the shelf is for the rich like Ruto himself and Julie Gichuru.
- The Jubilee government had a hand in Victor Wanyama’s record transfer to Southampton
- The Jubilee government also had a hand in the CAR victory of the Kenyan Rugby team.
- Kenyans have moved on from the PEV.
- Money is in the budget to ensure that IDPs have been resettled.

During the campaign period, Kenyans were promised heaven by many politicians. The ones that lost the elections however do not have anything to worry about but the ones in office now have a case to answer. The Jubilee coalition promised Kenyans so many things within a hundred days in power. This is something that Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto just as they hold hands in state house, should hold hands and explain to Kenyans why the promises are still far fetched.
It can be argued that almost all the pledges that were to be delivered within the 100 days of ruling have not been delivered. In fact the situation has worsened with tribalism playing a center role in many key industries. One such case is the energy industry which as reported by the Daily nation, it seems Uhuru, Ruto home turfs bag top jobs in energy industry.
Here is an excerpt from the Daily Nation
Top jobs in state-owned firms in the energy sector are now occupied by executives from the home area of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy.
KenGen, Kenya Power, Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) have appointed interim CEOs following the exit of their top brass with individuals from the Rift Valley and Central regions.
KenGen tapped Simon Ngure on June 27 to replace Eddy Njoroge while REA last week replaced Zachary Ayieko with Ng’ang’a Munyu — both appointees with roots in Central Kenya, the home turf of President Kenyatta.
The Rift Valley has benefited with the appointments of Ben Chumo and Charles Tanui as interim boss of Kenya Power and KPC respectively following the exit of Joseph Njoroge and Selest Kilinda.
The two populous regions voted overwhelmingly for President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Coalition in the March 4 elections — a move that saw Mr Kenyatta appoint the Cabinet and the principal secretary of the Energy and Petroleum ministry from Rift Valley and Central.
Davis Chirchir is the Cabinet Secretary while Mr Njoroge, who served as Kenya Power CEO since 2007, was appointed Energy principal secretary.

All in all, Kenyan’s can only sit back and hope for the best . Just as they saw 100 days to be so many, 5 years also seem very far. But somehow, Kenyans will get there and they will have to answer to Kenyans where they have failed and where they have succeeded. It is shameful when leaders get to a position of leadership and still goes on National TV saying “We will do this” “We shall do that” “In time we will”….
It is too early for anyone to term the government as a failure but we cannot also choose to ignore the early signs. It is better we as Kenyans start shaping it up instead of waiting for the 5 years to end and choose an even worse lot. People have high hopes for William Ruto and the Jubilee Government and it will not be fair for any Kenyan if leaders are to take Kenya back to the dark days.
On a lighter note, this is might explain a few things:
Jubilee should stop prioritizing unimportant issues like Kethi Kilonzo and focus on real issues affecting Kenyans across the country.
Next time when anyone from the government faces the Nation, I think it is in the best interest of Kenyans that they are interviewed thoroughly and not just face Kenyans and recite poems for wananchi. If there is anything that many Kenyans expected of the interview was William Ruto to simply explain why “unga” is not yet retailing at 60bob and Julie Gichuru failed Kenyans on that.
