The Kenyan Rugby

The Kenyan rugby has a long history as it is among the first games that were introduced by the white settlers in the Kenyan land. The first ever rugby game to be played in the Kenyan land was in the year 1909, when a team comprising of pure and predominantly British settlers officials took on the Afrikaner settlers in Eldoret.rugby1 The Kenyan Rugby

The governing body was later formed in the year 1923. Presently known as The Rugby Football Union of Kenya (RFU-K). A number of traditional clubs were formed during this period. They include; Impala RFC, Nondescript RFC, Harlequins RFC and Nairobi District team. For a number of years, the Nondescripts and the Harlequins were two of the best clubs in the country and they dominated the Kenyan rugby.

Not only had the white population failed to promote the game properly amongst the black African and Asian population in Kenya, but when employment restrictions were introduced by the newly independent Kenyan state, they ensured that a number of the white British and South Africans who had been the mainstay of the game previously left the country.

Until the mid 1970s, the sport in Kenya was dominated and mainly played by the white expatriates. This later changed after the formation of the black clubs, Mean Machine RFC and Mwamba RFC. As at today rugby in Kenya has gained popularity and i8s played almost exclusively by indigenous players all over the country. The main rugby tournaments in Kenya are hosted in Nairobi and only a few teams come from outside the capital city to participate in the tournaments.

The Kenyan rugby has grown and has got a larger number of fans in the country and all over the world. This has seen Kenya play a host of the annual Bamburi Rugby Super Series which includes teams from East Africa and the famous Safari sevens which is gaining popularity and has started attracting teams from the rest take part in the tournament.

Safari sevens is an international rugby sevens tournament played annually in Nairobi and is the most popular rugby competition in Kenya and across East Africa today. Since its introduction, many young and talented players have been identified by the participating teams and the required training given to them, hence boosting the squad of the national sevens team.rugby The Kenyan Rugby

The love and support that the Kenyan fans have shown to the sport, has motivated the national rugby team players and they have given good results in all the tournaments they have participated in. Currently, Kenya is ranked position five worldwide. The national team has got fans all over the world and they always prove a point why they deserve worldwide supporters whenever they go into a game.

The management and sponsorship of the game have seen it move and gain popularity very fast among the Kenyans. With the annual safari sevens just weeks away, many rugby Kenyan fans will to splash their cash just for them to get a chance of cheering their beloved teams. Thanks to the government of Kenya for showing total support of the sport.
