Daniel Adongo First Kenyan To Join the NFL

This has to be the most interesting news in Kenyan sports right now. Daniel Adongo is the first Kenyan in recent memory to join the NFL.

According to the The Indianapolis Colts today signed outside linebacker Daniel Adongo

“We are excited as an organization with the acquisition of Daniel Adongo,” said General Manager Ryan Grigson. “He is not only an elite athlete and rising international rugby player, but he is an exceptional competitor and human being that has the right makeup for our sport. We all look forward to watching his growth and development in the ensuing weeks.”

While playing in Kenya, he played for Strathmore School, where he was also crowned Sportsman of the Year. He joined the Kenya Harlequins junior team. He was spotted by South African scouts at the 2006 Safari Sevens tournament, playing in the schools category for Strathmore School. In 2007, he joined to the Natal Sharks academy. He progressed from Under–19 level in 2008 to Under–21 level in 2010.

Daniel Adongo at Counties Manukau

Adongo played 13 matches for the Steelers in last years’s NPC before heading back to South Africa to join the Kings.

At 1.98m and 115kg he is well known for his muscular physique and is perfectly built for the NFL. He joined Counties Manukau for the 2012 ITM Cup. He made his debut against Southland and played in eight matches for them on their way to winning the Championship and subsequent promotion to the Premiership. However, he wasn’t named in their 2013 squad.
