Nigerians in Kenya now claim that they are living in fear of arrest.

The National Association of Nigerians in Kenya released a statement condemning the harassment of genuine Nigerian business people in the country.

The harassment has taken a xenophobic dimension,  Just 2 days ago a Nigerian with Valid passport and entry Visa to Kenya was stopped by plain clothes policemen, when they requested for his passport, he promptly presented it to them.

3 days ago, 27 Nigerians were refused entry without Valid reasons yet we have a protocol of giving Visa’s on entry by both countries Embassy officials who visited the Nigerians in jails broke down in tears when the found out that they were not only innocent but that they were tortured and brutali

This comes amidst reports of a Kenya customs official being arrested for allegedly allowing another Nigerian drug kingpin into the country after he was deported.

Deteriorating Relations between Kenya and Nigerian

This doesn’t seem to help the relations between Kenya and Nigeria especially after the expulsion of Anthony Chinedu and the resulting arrest of Kenyans in Nigeria.

Maurice Ondiek has an interesting perspective on this relationship

The rot in Kenya is that suspected drug dealers have been allowed to carry out business with the full knowledge of the government, and with the facilitation of politicians and civil servants including police and intelligence officers.

The rot in the Nigerian Government is that a suspected drug dealer counts for more than the bilateral relationship between Kenya and Nigeria. It was amazing to hear Chinedu boasting that without his consent the Kenyan officials held hostage, — there is no other better term to describe them — by the Nigerian Government will not be released.
